A Guqin and Pipa from the Robert Hans van Gulik Collection

Played by Dr Cheng Yu

Robert Hans van Gulik (1910–1967), Dutch diplomat, musician, writer and sinologist, was a great admirer of traditional Chinese literati culture. Ahead of Fine Chinese Art on 2 November in London, we invited Dr Cheng Yu—former soloist in China’s National Orchestra—to play Van Gulik’s 17th-century guqin (zither) and pipa (lute), both brought to the market for the first time.
