Lot 33

Joni Mitchell:
The original artwork used for the album cover for Ladies of the Canyon, 1970

Joni Mitchell (Canadian, born 1943): The original artwork used for the album cover for Ladies of the Canyon, 1970. Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000.

This is one of the four original artworks in a series for the Ladies of the Canyon by Joni Mitchell. In Joni's own words: "This was the cover for the Ladies of the Canyon album. The figure is a self-portrait, and in the folds of the skirt I put the view from the window of my Laurel Canyon house. So, it was just a personal neighborhood statement."

This piece was created by Joni for Gary. The “Annie” that Joni sings about in the ‘Ladies of the Canyon’ song refers to Gary's wife at the time. “She is a lady of the canyon... Annie sits you down to eat... She always makes you welcome in...”

Lot 36

Jackson Browne:
The rare and original 'Water Bag' used for the debut album Jackson Browne, circa 1972

Jackson Browne: The rare and original 'Water Bag' used for the debut album Jackson Browne, circa 1972. Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000.

Gary and Jackson Browne spent a lot of time in the desert, where they relied on a clever cooling trick during long drives. They used a water bag, soaking it in water and hanging it from the car’s hood ornament or bumper. As the car moved, the water slowly evaporated, helping to keep the car cool.

Gary says about the bag, "When I made this cover for Jackson, I tried to make it look like a real water bag. Using a black and white photograph of Jackson that Henry Diltz took, I created a high contrast image to give it a silk-screened look. The inside sleeve was a beautiful color shot of water printed on shiny paper. Later we had a billboard on the Sunset strip that was the front grill of my old Ford station wagon with the water bag album cover hanging on it. It was cool."

Lot 52

Eagles:
The original hand-drawn concept design by Gary Burden for the album cover for Desperado, 1973

Eagles: The original hand-drawn concept design by Gary Burden for the album cover for Desperado, 1972. Estimate: $30,000 - $40,000.

This is a truly unique piece—Gary’s original hand-sketched concept for the Desperado album cover. The artwork draws directly from the music video created for the Eagles’ Desperado album, which Gary both wrote and directed. Shot in sepia-toned Super 8 film by renowned photographer Henry Diltz, the video was transferred to videotape and used to promote the album.

The concept centered around a Wild West theme, with the members of the band styled as outlaws. In preparation for the shoot, Gary visited his favorite costume shop, something he often did for his projects, to source the period wardrobe and props. After filming, he sketched this design as the initial vision for the album cover. What you see here is his original pencil rendering, capturing the essence of the project from its earliest creative stages.

Lot 30

Rick Griffin:
The El Chingadero Art Show Poster, 1971

Rick Griffin (American, 1944-1991): The El Chingadero Art Show Poster, 1971. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.

This masterpiece poster is by Rick Griffin, a leading designer of psychedelic posters and a key figure of the Zap Comix collective and surfing subculture. The poster was created for an art exhibition Gary put on for his friend, Boyd Elder – the artist behind the imagery used for the album One of These Nights by the Eagles.

The El Chingadero Art Show was an important artistic and musical gathering for the Laurel Canyon music scene, which included Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, and Cass Elliot, to name a few. The show hosted one of the earliest live performances by the Eagles.

Gary and Rick were close friends and worked on many iconic projects together making this a significant symbol of Gary’s friendships and artistic vision at a pivotal time for West Coast music.

Lot 2

The Mamas & the Papas / Mama Cass:
A group of album proof sheets, transparencies and prints, circa 1968

The Mamas & the Papas/Mama Cass: A group of album proof sheets, transparencies and prints, circa 1968. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.

Cass Elliott and Gary shared a close friendship that lasted a lifetime. Gary designed Cass’s house in Laurel Canyon, and she was so impressed by his work that she insisted he create her album covers as well. Her album was the first he ever worked on, marking the beginning of their long creative partnership.

When it came time to design the cover for her album Bubblegum, Lemonade &... Something for Mama, Gary fondly recalled how he had everyone chew bubblegum so it could be kneaded like dough, then shaped and hand-cut to form the frame for the front cover—a process that sparked plenty of laughter.

Lot 17

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young:
Two album cover proofs for Déjà Vu, circa 1970

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: Two album cover proofs for Déjà Vu, circa 1970. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.

This is one of Gary’s most important covers for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Based on Stephen Stills' idea of doing a Civil War era photo, Gary masterminded this cover using an old tintype camera and making a sun print on coated plates.

To make the paper look like old leather, he used rare, expensive textural paper made by a small family paper company. He hired photographer Tom Gundelfinger and rented an old wooden body camera. It required making their own emulsions, using long exposures with photo sensitive paper on top.

Gary says, “This entire event was how I always did my photo shoot sessions; creating a friendly and relaxed environment and having everything together so there were no hiccups to interrupt the mood or vibe that was created. Everyone in the band was into their character and ready to project that onto film. No one complained about having to pose immobile for several minutes at a time. It was a total collaboration, and everyone was playing their roles perfectly, to the hilt I might add.”

Lot 44

Gary Burden's Personal & Working Sketchbook, circa 1972

Gary Burden's Personal & Working Sketchbook 10 featuring designs for America, Asylum Records stationary, Roxy, Albert Hammond, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Byrds, Eagles, Poco, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and Graham Nash, circa 1972. Estimate: $12,000 - $15,000.

For as long as I've known Gary, he always carried his sketchbook and notebook with him. He was always conceptualizing and drawing. His sketchbooks show his creative process from beginning to end, from the 1960s to 2010s. He had notes for iconic albums he designed from Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Eagles, Jackson Browne, and Joni Mitchell, to name a few.

Gary’s sketchbooks illustrate the tactile work process before computers, all done by hand with pen and pencil. Gary always said, "Paper First" as the art depended on what kind of paper it sat on. He liked to use rare and expensive textured paper. He was especially focused on the feel of the paper and would handle countless swatches of paper before he picked the perfect one for a project. This sketchbook and the others included in the sale are a rare glimpse into the inner mind of Gary himself.
