Under the Hammer
Camille Walala's Top Picks from
Pop x Culture 2021

Camille Walala is best known for her large-scale and explosively colourful interventions in public spaces. Encompassing full-facade murals, immersive 3D installations, street art, interiors and set design, Camile's work is characterised by a fusion of bold colours and playful geometric patterns.
Central to Camille’s vision is the accessible nature of art – that art can be anything and is for everyone. This idea lies at the heart of Pop art and is celebrated by the upcoming Pop x Culture sale. We are delighted to collaborate with Camille on this auction; not only will Pop x Culture offer three paintings by the artist (lots 65-67), but Camille will complete a mural in our flagship New Bond Street headquarters which will be on view during the exhibition and beyond.
Here, we spoke to Camille about her favourite lots going under the hammer on 11 November, from Keith Haring to De La Soul album artwork.

Lot 59. De La Soul, Six Original Studies for the De La Soul '3 Feet High and Rising' Debut Album Artwork, 1988/89. Estimate: £ 3,000 - 4,000
Not only do I love this album, I also love the playful element of the design and the vibrancy of the colours. I have strong memories of seeing this album in the record stores when it was released and it was so incredibly eye-catching. I think the childlike illustrations really match the storytelling style of De La Soul’s music. So much joy!
Lot 61
Keith Haring,
Pop Shop Bag
Lot 61. Keith Haring (1958-1990), Pop Shop Bag. Estimate: £ 500 - 700
Lot 61. Keith Haring (1958-1990), Pop Shop Bag. Estimate: £ 500 - 700
Keith Haring is a hero of mine. His attitude towards accessibility in art is something that really resonates with me and this bag from his Pop Shop is such a perfect example of how anyone could own a little piece of art. And it is, of course, a piece of history too as it was one of the first-ever art-driven shops. I love the colour palette, it is quite different from the rest of his more well-known pieces.
Lot 57
Patrick Caulfield,
Some Poems of Jules Laforgue
Lot 57. Patrick Caulfield (1936-2005), Some Poems of Jules Laforgue, 1973. Estimate: £ 8,000 - 12,000
Lot 57. Patrick Caulfield (1936-2005), Some Poems of Jules Laforgue, 1973. Estimate: £ 8,000 - 12,000
What I absolutely love about Patrick Caulfield is how he takes the everyday mundane and elevates it to create beautiful pieces of art. I love the simplicity of the graphics and how he chooses his compositions. The use of the black lines makes everything pop!
Lot 62
David Shrigley,
Vibes
Lot 62. David Shrigley (born 1968), Vibes, 2018. Estimate: £ 600 - 800
Lot 62. David Shrigley (born 1968), Vibes, 2018. Estimate: £ 600 - 800
David Shrigley is another one of my all-time favourite artists. His work shows that art doesn’t haven’t to take itself too seriously. I love the confidence of his minimalist approach and of course the dry sense of humour that comes with it.
Lot 60
Keith Haring,
Bayer Suite
Lot 60. Keith Haring (1958-1990), Bayer Suite, 1982. Estimate: £ 5,000 - 7,000
Lot 60. Keith Haring (1958-1990), Bayer Suite, 1982. Estimate: £ 5,000 - 7,000
What I find incredible about Keith Haring is how with only a few simple lines he can tell such a strong visual story. There is so much love and energy in these drawings. How amazing would it be to own this collection of pieces!
Lot 58
Tom Wesselmann,
Blonde on Blanket
Lot 58. Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004), Blonde on Blanket, 1998. Estimate: £ 8,000 - 12,000
Lot 58. Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004), Blonde on Blanket, 1998. Estimate: £ 8,000 - 12,000
Tom Wesselmann’s work always stands out from the crowd for me. I find his use of scale and materials so incredibly striking. His style of illustration is very unique and the bold use of colour complements the confident lines of his work beautifully.
Lot 60
Joan Cornellà,
Deeb
Lot 63. Joan Cornellà (born 1981), Deeb, 2018. Estimate: £ 500 - 700
Lot 63. Joan Cornellà (born 1981), Deeb, 2018. Estimate: £ 500 - 700
I discovered Joan Cornellà's work when I went to PUBLIC gallery for an exhibition a couple of years back. I love the unsettling nature of his humour. On first sight, the cartoons are so bright and inviting; they lure you into a false sense of security. I love how he captures the anxiety of day-to-day life and pairs it with childlike drawings.
Pop x Culture will take place on 11 November 2021 at Bonhams London, New Bond Street.
