The Greg Louganis Olympic Collection

Bonhams is privileged to present The Greg Louganis Olympic Collection, featuring two Olympic gold medals (1984, 1988) and one Olympic silver medal (1976) in men’s diving, along with a collection of memorabilia from his competition days.
Coming to auction on 14 September in Los Angeles, these three medals encapsulate the indomitable spirit of Louganis and represent the pinnacle of his barrier-breaking career.
The GOAT
Regarded as the greatest diver in history, Greg Louganis is the only male athlete to have won back-to-back gold medals in both springboard and platform diving events and the only man to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympics. The first to amass 700 points in a diving competition under the current scoring system, Louganis is still the only one who has accomplished that feat in the Olympics.
During his career, Louganis won 5 Olympic medals, 5 World Championship titles, 6 Pan American titles and 47 national titles—a record that no other diver in the world has come close to achieving. In fact, he likely would have had 2 more gold medals had it not been for a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, where he was a favourite to win.
Often described as "poetry in motion" Louganis' graceful spins and twists in mid-air made the impossible look easy and captivated audiences worldwide.
Louganis' legacy extends well beyond his extraordinary diving statistics. Recognised as a LGBTQ+ icon, he courageously came out publicly at the 1994 Gay Games in New York and shared his HIV+ status through his memoir, "Breaking the Surface," published in 1995.
Louganis aimed to motivate others and dismantle the stigma surrounding HIV. By showcasing that being HIV+ did not prevent him from achieving Olympic gold, he shattered barriers and inspired positive change.
Today, as a coach, speaker, author, actor, activist and humanitarian, Louganis continues his tradition of excellence by championing causes that have personally impacted him and remain close to his heart, including diversity, learning differences, mental health, adoption/foster care, LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS.
He plans to donate a portion of the auction's proceeds to benefit The Damien Center, Indiana's oldest and largest HIV/AIDS care facility, in support of its One Home Capital Campaign initiative.
