Under the Hammer
Steven Rodel's Top Picks from Home & Interiors

For over two decades, Guy Goodfellow’s atelier of designers, architects, and draughtsmen has crafted interiors defined by their quiet sophistication and deep sense of place. Their work is rooted in a reverence for architectural heritage—honouring the bones of a building while infusing it with modern relevance and a quietly luxurious sensibility. Antiques, bespoke pieces, and characterful finds are seamlessly layered to tell the unique story of each space.
In the lead-up to Home & Interiors, we asked Steven Rodel, Creative Director at Guy Goodfellow, to share his top picks from the auction—and offer expert insight into how these timeless pieces can be thoughtfully integrated into the home.
"A wonderfully idiosyncratic bunch of pieces I’ve pulled together with several different projects in mind - because that’s how we, as a practice, are always sourcing. One day we’re working on a house in the country, the next a London apartment, or a sprawling house in the Middle East. That’s why it’s so important to approach sales like this with an eye for breadth and possibility - to reimagine objects with a view to creating a personal, curated mix and blend for a client."

Lot 182
Parcel-Gilt Side Chairs
"At least four of these beauties date back to the Louis XVI period (c.1790), with the remaining ‘made to match’ later. A dream find for anyone looking to pull together a relaxed yet elegant dining room. I love that they're not all the exact same period—it gives them soul. They’d sit just as happily in a London dining space as in a light-filled Provençal kitchen."
Lot 231
A Queen Anne Japanned Mirror
"Formerly retailed by Lenygon & Morant, likely in the early 20th century. I’m completely taken by the patina of time on this mirror - the lacquer, the japanning, the sense of history is extraordinary. This would be fabulous for a bathroom (though the plate might need replacing). It’s the sort of piece that starts conversations and for us, finishes rooms."
Lot 233
Patinated Bronze & Rosso Antico Marble Garniture Urns
"These are sculptural, architectural pieces with weight and presence. They could sit anywhere: on a sideboard, a hall console, flanking a fireplace."

Lot 280
A Gilt Brass Mounted Mahogany Cartonnier
"This would be fantastic in a gentleman’s dressing room. Think Howard Slatkin, Fifth Avenue apartment. Imagine this with lined drawers for gloves, scarves, socks and pocket squares. I never like for a dressing room to feel that fitted so finding the ‘found item’ to build the room around creates a great anchor."
Lot 395
An Inlaid Octagonal Low Table
"A jewel box of craftsmanship. These are so easy to place - next to a sofa, beside a bed, in an orangery or in a bathroom corner. Somewhere to rest a book, a glass, an ashtray."
Lot 97
A Walnut and Yew Wood Escritoire
"I’m always drawn to walnut. The colour ranges from light to dark chocolate, sometimes with purplish undertones. The grain can be straight, or wildly dramatic with swirls and curls and the texture has a beautiful natural lustre. This piece has an intriguing, almost anachronistic construction that feels ripe with character and history. I can imagine it anchoring a study or hallway—with a garniture of Delft or Imari porcelain perched on top for a little contrast and drama."
