Bonhams is honoured to present Scholarly Gems from the Collection of Mr & Mrs Gerard Hawthorn which will be offered in a live auction at New Bond Street, London, on 14 May.

Asaph Hyman, Bonhams Global Head of Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art, commented: “Gerard Hawthorn’s past six decades, since he joined Sydney L. Moss Ltd. In 1963, throughout his career and to his last day, were driven by his love of Asian art which shaped his life. The pieces of bamboo, bronze, enamel, wood, lacquer, hardstone and ink-cakes, that he constantly surrounded himself with, were loved, admired, appreciated and cared for by him – much like a literati scholar of the past. He was a true collector, scholar, dealer, and most of all a gentleman. It was his wish to bring this collection to the public and for the present generation of collectors to enjoy it as much as he did.”
