Face to face with a Qing Dynasty Hero

Bannerman Te’er Deng Che

A highlight of our Fine Chinese Art auction on 18 May, this rare painting of the bannerman Te’er Deng Che was commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor (1736–1795) in honour of his bravery and archery skills in the Taiwan Campaign of 1786–1788—one of the Emperor’s ‘Ten Great Campaigns’ during his reign.

The bannermen were Qianlong Emperor’s military elite, consisting of Manchus, Mongols and Han Chinese. Te’er Deng Che was from the Solon People.

Two series of paintings were made to commemorate the Taiwan Campaign—only five other bannerman portraits from the second series are known to have survived.
