A Closer Look: Two Masterpieces of 16th Century Tibetan Painting
Discover two extraordinary Tibetan thangkas, each created in the 16th century, yet shaped by two distinct painting schools. A powerful Khyenri black-ground thangka presents Mahakala in monumental form. His sixteen arms and four faces emerge from a field of deep black with striking compositional clarity. In luminous contrast, a Menri painting attributed to Trengkawa shows Amitabha Buddha seated in meditation in his Pureland on a radiant gold ground, flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani.
Korean Art Across Centuries: Balance, Humility, and Poetry
From the royal kilns of Gwangju to the quiet villages of modern Korea, a shared aesthetic endures. Fine Japanese & Korean Art traces the evolution of Korean artistry from the 18th to the 20th century, from Joseon Moon Jars to Modern paintings by Park Soo-Keun. Across time and medium, these works reveal a distinctly Korean vision of beauty rooted in humility, balance, and the quiet poetry of everyday life.
Chinese Printmaking: From the Tang Dynasty to the 20th Century
From connoisseur culture to social commentary, Chinese printmaking has evolved across centuries.
Polychrome woodblock printing first emerged in China in the early 17th century. At its pinnacle stands the Ten Bamboo Studio Manual of Calligraphy and Painting, which reveals an extraordinary collaboration between painters, woodcarvers, and printers to achieve subtle color gradations and remarkable fidelity to the artist’s brush. By the 20th century, printers embraced woodblock techniques to depict the realities of war, poverty, and social struggle.
Often created for ephemeral use, surviving Chinese prints are increasingly rare, making the examples that endure all the more remarkable.
Buddhist Art & Imperial Elegance: Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art
Throughout China’s history, the transformation of precious materials has embodied both spiritual devotion and imperial power. Leading our Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art auction are exceptional survivors of these traditions.
A rare gilt-bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara reflects the spiritual depth and technical mastery of the early Ming dynasty, while a pair of finely carved Zitan corner-leg tables from the Qianlong/Jiaqing period represents the height of court refinement. Further highlights include an exceptional Yangcai 'Lotus' bottle vase and an imposing 7th-century marble figure of Maitreya.
