Chinese Paintings & Works of Art 中國藝術專場

15 March at 10:00 EST in New York 三月十五日早上十時

In the first of our series of Asian Art auctions, Chinese Works of Art and Paintings, we are honored to offer four lots from the famed Collection of James and Marilynn Alsdorf highlighted by an arresting black stone Buddhist figure of Maitreya, depicted as an Indian Prince, dating from the Northern Wei period (5th-6th century).

Amongst a large number of private collections of lacquer, ceramics and jade carvings is a dark russet-skinned nephrite boulder of rich green color. Deeply hollowed, it reveals a quietly meditative Buddhist figure, Bodhidharma, in a cave interior, near a rushing waterfall set in a tree-filled mountain landscape.

One of the most intriguing items offered is a Song dynasty white ceramic pillow (12th-13th century) that bears an imperial poem written by the Qianlong emperor in 1746. The poem is carefully engraved to the porcelaneous white glaze and praises the achievements of the Song dynasty potters that made it.

Among the fine Chinese paintings, we are pleased to offer important works from the Collection of Michael Gallis. In addition to outstanding works by 20th century masters Qi Baishi (1864-1957) and one of the final albums that capped the career of Cheng Shifa (1921-2007), buyers will be attracted by the excellent provenance and distinction of these paintings.

Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art 印度、喜馬拉雅及南亞藝術專場

16 March at 18:00 EST in New York  三月十六日下午六時

This year’s Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art auction features a curated selection of 38 lots. Leading the auction is a superb Pala brass figure of Vajravarahi from Northeastern India. Created during the 11th century, it is one of the earliest sculptural images of this important female deity. She is joined by a large and remarkable 12th-century Chola bronze figure of Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed god, which leads the discerning offering of Indian sculptures from the Siddharth K. Bhansali Collection. The auction also presents important Nepalese bronze sculptures, a choice selection of Tibetan thangkas, and high-quality Indian miniature paintings.

Fine Japanese and Korean Art 日本韓國藝術專場

17 March at 10:00 EST in New York 三月十七日早上十時

This year's Fine Japanese and Korean Art auction is lead by an important 11th/12th-century lacquered wood sculpture of Amida Buddha. This Amida Buddha on exhibits several hallmark features of Heian-period sculpture such as soft lines, a voluminous body and limbs, and an almost childlike appearance, with a gentle, serene expression. Equally compelling from a slightly earlier date is an important model of a celestial musician from the Horyuji temple.

The Korean section features an outstanding selection of ceramics from a private Japanese collection formed in the early 20th century. One of the highlights of this group is a white porcelain brush pot, carved on the surface with symbols of long life. Rounding out the section is a large-scale painting of the Yeongsan (Vulture Peak) Assembly, which features the historical Buddha preaching the Lotus Sutra to his disciples.
