A Closer Look at
Natural Fancy Pink Diamonds
Leading our New York Jewels auction on May 23 is a magnificent platinum ring set with a Fancy Pink radiant-cut diamond weighing approximately 6.22 carats. A true gemological treasure, natural Fancy Pink diamonds are as exceedingly rare as they are beautiful.
Here, Caroline Morrissey, Head of Jewellery in New York, explains the rarity of natural Fancy Pink diamonds and why they are coveted by collectors across the globe.
Origins
Globally revered for their beauty and incredible scarcity, pink diamonds account for only 0.1% of the 20 million carats of diamonds that are mined from the earth each year. With the recent closure of Australia's Argyle Diamond Mine in 2020, which historically was responsible for producing more than 90% of the world’s pink diamonds, these spectacular stones are now even more scarce.
The exact formation process of natural pink diamonds is romantically enigmatic. The prevailing theory is that, unlike most other coloured diamonds, their colour is caused not by trace elements in their chemical composition, but by a lucky miracle of nature, a distortion within their atomic lattice caused by the pressure exerted on them during their formation.
Despite the unknown origins of their captivating color, pink diamonds continue to be one of the most sought-after coloured diamonds by serious collectors. The best specimens have been kept as treasures in the collections of royalty, rulers, and museums, celebrated for their elusive beauty.
Colour & Size
Pink diamonds occur in a range of secondary hues including purple, orange and brown; however, the ideal pink diamond is one that exhibits only one true colour: pink. According to the GIA, of all the diamonds found in a single year, only 1 in 100,000 could be graded as having a “fancy color,” making natural Fancy color diamonds one of the world’s most extreme rarities.
The strong demand for natural Fancy Pink diamonds speaks to the market’s consistent appreciation for the provenance, rarity and beauty of these stones. Undeniably rare in any size, pink diamonds over 5 carats are rarer still, making this spectacular ring highly covetable among collectors across the globe.
Natural Fancy Pink diamonds of this size do not frequently cross the auction block, but when they do they continue to achieve staggering results, as seen with London's Fine Fancy Pink Diamond (sold for £2.2 million). Unless the unlikely event occurs that another plentiful source of natural pink diamonds is discovered, we expect the trend of record-breaking prices to continue indefinitely.
We are delighted to present this Impressive Pink Colored Diamond ring in our New York Jewels auction on May 23.
