The Mary and Cheney Cowles Collection of Classical Chinese Furniture

20 March at 11:00 EDT in New York

Twenty exquisite examples of classical Chinese furniture will be presented in a dedicated sale of the private collection of Mary and Cheney Cowles.

In 1975, Mr. Cowles founded the Crane Gallery in Seattle. Following his marriage to Mrs. Cowles in 1977, the couple became avid collectors of Asian art, a passion they have pursued for over 40 years. They are known for gifting a significant portion of their Japanese painting collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, and the Portland Art Museum.

Among top lots in this exceptional collection are three rare and important huanghuali chairs. One of them is a yokeback armchair featuring a framed backrest flanked by two intricate latticework panels forming the symbol wan above a lower panel centered on two seal script characters tai ping. The inscription conveys a wish of ‘eternal peace’ (wannian taiping).
